The branch was founded in 1939. The aim was to improve and develop conditions of rural life, by providing a centre for educational and social activities.

In 1943 the WI called a public meeting to consider forming a “Garden Produce Association”. WI members still help by providing refreshments at the annual garden show.

Since the 1970`s a village carol service has been organised , with the participation of the school children and a collection for a local charity.

The first Village Map was designed by members in 1971, upgraded in 1985 and later amended to be reinstated in front of the new village hall.

The WI erected a bench on the canal bank at Lower Lock, to mark the Millennium, and another provided for the opening of the new burial ground.
